Proper Weight Management Leads to Healthy Weight Loss

Proper weight management is not just about losing weight. It's about maintaining the correct weight for your own body type. It also includes paying attention to measurements other than the numbers on your scale, such as body measurements, BMI and body fat.

You use all of these types of measurements to get to your optimal weight and health. When you are your best weight for you, you will also be at your most attractive.

You will not be able to reach your target weight immediately. It will take time and effort. After all, you did not reach your current weight overnight. There is no "miracle" pill or cure that will do it for you either. Only proper diet and physical activity will get you to your goal.

There are methods that will help you jump start your weight loss efforts. Your doctor may prescribe an appetite suppressant to get you started. These drugs are not to be used on a long term basis but as a short term "boost" as a part of your diet and exercise program.

Fad diets abound so you should take care before starting the follow the "next best diet." Many are just nothing but hype designed to catch your attention. The cost of these fancy diets can be outrageous. They can also be dangerous. Always consult your health care professional for advice. You may lose weight on these programs at first but, it usually doesn't last long.

You shouldn't cut the calories that you take in by too much. Your body still needs energy to function. Carbohydrates are the primary source of that energy. When the body doesn't get the necessary amount of carbohydrates (mostly glucose), it gets it from other sources. This usually leads to muscle loss instead of fat loss.

When you go on a low carbohydrate diet, you reduce the amounts of glucose in the muscles and liver which leads to muscle fatigue and loss of strength. Then, of course, exercising becomes more difficult which results in even less muscle tone.

A better program for weight loss would be to commit to a change to a more healthy lifestyle. It's not as easy as taking a pill but the weight you lose is more likely to stay lost. You should educate yourself in nutrition and the foods that are higher in vitamins, minerals and fiber and lower in calories. Do you eat white bread? Substitute whole wheat bread for it. Start eating fresh fruit instead of cake and ice cream. Just making a few changes like these can work wonders.

Exercise is also extremely important in weight loss (and maintenance). You don't have to work out until you drop, but you do need some sort of physical activity. Put together a program of aerobic and muscle strengthening exercises that you can do easily. Take some walks or ride a bicycle.

And, most important: don't give up! These lifestyle changes will be permanent. That doesn't mean that you can't treat yourself to a candy bar now and then, but it does mean that the majority of your nutrition will come from vegetables, fruits and lean meats and protein.
